The Big Leap

Thursday, September 22nd, 2022

It was mid-September, I was on a high as I headed into the final trimester of my first year in REI. I had been recently blessed with a handful of positive events in my REI ventures.
·      Featured in an upcoming WREIN monthly newsletter for my REI achievements.
·      A new business partnership coming together that would strengthen my footprint in South Chicagoland.
·      A lending opportunity off to a timely start.
·      Contractors showing up on schedule and completing their work timely and beautifully!
Yet, I found myself in and out of tears this one particular day.
If you haven’t read this novel, The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks, it’s been instrumental in shaping my mindset and has helped me overcome the negative emotions that seem to haunt me particularly after a slew of positive events.
Have you ever wondered why that is? You’re achieving success, things are going in the right direction, numerous opportunities present themselves within a short matter of time…you think to yourself…YES! I’m finally seeing the fruits of tireless hours of hard work!
And then, suddenly, you’re overcome with negative emotions, a debilitating turn of events or even physical sickness? This is all too common believe it or not. Gay Hendricks refers to this bigger sequence of events as Upper-Limiting. Put concisely, these negative events are your signal that you are breaking through to a higher level…it’s uncomfortable, the uncertainty makes you nervous to the point of bringing on physical discomfort (that silly argument you had with your husband/partner the other day, that wave of anxiety that pushed you to tears one moment, your child’s fever that altered your plans that week…you know the events I’m referring to).
To quote Mr. Hendricks, “The next time you find yourself with a stomachache…ask yourself if you might be Upper-Limiting. Sometimes a headache’s just a headache, but often if you look a little deeper, you’ll find that it’s an expression of your Upper Limit Problem. Then, it’s a signal that you need to expand instead of contract. It’s telling you that it’s time to open up and embrace a new high-water mark of positive energy that’s trying to establish itself in you…the surface pain is often caused by resisting the underlying positive message.”
So, on this morning of tears, I reminded myself that truly great things are just around the corner, despite the haunting “what-ifs”…
·      What if the Harvey property doesn’t appraise?
·      What if I must evict all the tenants in my Cal City property?
·      What if I can’t find the private money to move forward with the flip opportunity in Chicago?
I truly believe my Upper-Limiting signals even bigger opportunities and greater success is just around the corner.
So, with that, encouraged by my Upper-Limiting, I continued to “do the things” that move my business forward with a positive mindset. The tears initially brought on by uncertainty and fear, inspired a shift in mindset and ultimately set my positive course for the remainder of the day.
Thank you, Gay!
☕ Cheers ☕
